Moonlighting embraces new technology with Africa’s first REMI studio

REMI studio 1

Remote Production, Africa:

Moonlighting recently assembled the first multi-camera, remote production studio in Africa through its sports content division Moonsport. This significantly lowered the costs of production for remote & multi-venue filming.

While rugby is a relatively small sport compared to soccer on the continent, there is a growing base of players and fans.  Therefore the Rugby Africa Cup (** see below) required a Production Service where 20 games were filmed in 12 different countries, but on minimal budgets.

The remote production process:

We kept the entire production team in our office in Cape Town. Only the camera function happening on the ground in the country where the game was played. Hence we used the Cloud to transfer the image from the ground to the studio. Philip Key explains, “The camera plugs into a modem that has 8 bonded SIM cards which allowed the full HD signal to reach Cape Town within one and a half seconds. Here we added the commentary, graphics, stats and audio mix. This was before streaming the signal via Facebook and YouTube to an internet audience wherever they may be.”.

Why use remote production?

To keep costs down by flying one producer with the modems to the country where the game took place. In some cases, we flew an additional person as the primary cameraman but mainly sourced local cameramen.  Additional cost savings were achieved by amortising the budget of the studio crew. Because we filmed matches in Ghana and Cote D’Ivore in one day by scheduling morning and afternoon games. Accomplishing both within a 10 hour studio day.

“The process was remarkably efficient and the quality of the production uncompromising” remarked Philip.“. We look forward to the next 16 games in the middle of 2020.”.

As for relevance to commercial productions. We can also use the system to provide a remote Video Take Off facility on our commercial productions if needed by our clients. It’s probably not any director’s choice to have head office calling the shots from afar but the system could provide a solution for clients. Especially those who are an integral part of the production process but cannot travel to the shoot.

Authenticity was key for US cheese brand Sargento’s 8 day shoot

Authenticity was key for US cheese brand Sargento’s 8 day shoot

Importance of ‘real’ film location

Film location authenticity was key when casting the 240 ‘real’ people and 22 locations for the 30 vignettes we shot with Fiona Media’s Theresa Wingert and agency Ogilvy Chicago for US Cheese brand Sargento’s latest campaign. It is based around numerous natural, real-life occasions and moments.

We cast real chefs and real families. We shot in real soup kitchens, “real” homes. Hence food stylist Emma Wilson and her team worked from a mobile food truck, creating delicious cheese dishes at each location.

An “American” Arm for South Africa.

An “American” Arm for South Africa.

American arm image 800 x 500

Motocrane, our weapon of choice.

A useful tool to the armory needed for so many car shoots is the Motocrane recently bought to the country by Kevin O’Reilly.  Our clients will know Kevin for the outstanding grip work he has provided for many years.  Therefore MotoCrane seems to solve quite a few challenges that normally come with using a remotely controlled, arm system like the Russian or Freedom Arms.

Flexibility in vehicle choice is the first asset.  Hence the rig can be fixed to literally any vehicle from a dune buggy to an Audi Q7.  It will ride on the Nissan Navara V8 4×4 for most of its time, but should the need arise, it can take advantage of the speed of fast saloon car or the off-road capabilities of a six wheeler.

It would seem that the only limitation of this rig is that it cannot take as heavy a rig as the two existing options mentioned above.  Therefore with the Ronin 2 it uses a lighter package with short lenses while the Movi XL allows both a heavier body with accessories and longer lenses.  It is comfortable with the Shotover G1 and the SRH-3.

It boasts a full 360-degree operating circle with preset parameters limiting movement to avoid unintended operating moves.  Because it seems to be nimble, quick to assemble and take apart. A head like the Ronin 2 will simply click off the MotoCrane to be immediately attached to a drone, black arm or other rig.  All viewing and operating systems are wireless.

Why pick the Motocrane?

A producer’s dream is having a rig that can be made roadworthy and ready to move between locations in short period of time.  The Motocrane needs the head and weights removed and thereafter the crane arm reduces in size to be within regular travel requirements.

Pricing is very competitive and with a fully local operating crew of two persons for the crane and one for the head the need for travelling specialist operators is no longer a necessity.  The manufacture’s PDF is available for download at https://static1.squarespace.com/static/548ddecae4b0b57ba188069a/t/5d2f4a708a844f000111f398/1563380341756/MotoCrane+ULTRA+Product+Brochure+1.2.pdf.

Life begins at 40! Shooting Jula with Traktor and Giants & Toys

Jula screengrab 800 x 500

Jula with Giants & Toys

Jula was the second of three ads we shot with Giants & Toys this year. Directed by Traktor for Garbergs, Stockholm, “Life begins at 40” was a blast. We found the steepest, accessible mountain bike track for our 40+ woman. We built a seriously steep skateboard ramp for our 40+ businessman that unnerved the best of them, Giants & Toys. Enter “The Karl” – partner at Cape Town’s legendary indoor skateboard park, The Shred – who turned up, casually slayed it and was back at The Shred in an hour.

The Kevin Castanheira film gives you a depth of image and beauty that just can’t be recreated in the digital world – enthused Moonlighting producer Valentia Fisher after completing an intense 7-day shoot for Hit the Road – the gorgeous launch campaign for Marshall Portable Speakers – with director Kevin Castanheira, the team from London’s Dog Eat Dog and Marshall Speakers creative head, Andrew Sekora.

“It was gratifying to know that we still have the necessary expertise to shoot film in South Africa” she added.

They shot on all types of film from Bolex and 16mm right the way through to 35mm as they followed the Hit the Road journey that culminates in a nostalgic recreation of 1969’s Woodstock.
